Episode 005 - Marinating on Leadership vs. Discipleship

Why do we talk so much about leadership when the Bible talks so much about discipleship. Pastor Derwin marinates on the state of leadership and discipleship of the Church.

Notes from this episode:

  • The New Testament uses the term disciple 269 times and the world leadership only 3 times.

  • A disciple is a leader, but a leader is not necessarily a disciple.

  • Kobe Bryant in the air.

  • Pragmatism. Could it be that we, as the church, are importing pragmatic, business principles into the church? Instead of building churches we are building businesses that sell a product called Jesus.

  • Leadership in the New Testament. Romans 12:8. I Thess. 5:12. I Tim. 3:4. I Tim. 3:12. I Tim 5:17. Titus 3:8. Titus 3:14.

  • Jesus gives His disciples a leadership lesson, which is really a lesson on discipleship. Matthew 20:24-28.

  • We lead because we love Jesus and His people.

  • We lead to see Jesus’ people participate in the life of Jesus and become like Him. We lead to join Jesus in creating missionaries.

  • We lead because we are following Jesus as His disciples. Our discipleship fuels our leadership.

  • We lead knowing that it is not about building our own Kingdom, it’s about Jesus and His Kingdom.

  • C.S. Lewis quote.

  • Jerkasaurus.

  • 4 Warning Signs: 1) You start to feel entitled. 2) You begin to show signs of insecurity. 3) You begin to use God’s people to push and build your platform. 4) You do not surround yourself with people who will challenge you.
